Final Friday October 26
Final Friday Art and Music at Beatnik Studios
Beatnik Studios is presenting a special reception on Friday October 26th featuring paintings by Bay Area artist, Lisa Alonzo and photographs by ARC Photography and New Media instructor, Brandy Worsfold. The artists reception will be from 6:00 - 9:00 pm, followed by a concert featuring four bands - Be Brave Bold Robot, Buzzmutt (from SF), Cold Eskimo and Appetite.
Lisa Alonzo grew up on a Christmas tree farm in northern California. She spent her childhood painting trees, a mile long fence, and watching Bob Ross. After studying design at Cal State Long Beach, she received her BFA in Fine Art from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco in 2008. She currently lives and works in the Bay Area where she has exhibited widely. SF Weekly named Alonzo as one of ten Finalists in their 2012 Masterminds competition.
In her new series of cake paintings, titled Easily Digestible, Alonzo explores the current societal trend of our crumbling relationship with reality. What is real? What is an illusion? Who is perpetuating that illusion, and what does it mean for our future? She states, “In creating this series, I chose images that have a disturbing aspect to them, and then manipulate that image to create something beautiful and enticing. Something that looks alluring and consumable, but shouldn't necessarily be.”
Alonzo represents her objects in symbolic form. In creating the image, she mimics the pixels seen onscreen using a pastry tip normally used for decorating cakes applying thousands of tiny saturated dots or starbursts in a pointillistic manner. The resulting images look truly delicious.
Brandy Worsfold is an artist and teacher residing in Sacramento. She works as an Assistant Professor of Art at ARC teaching in the Photography and New Media Departments. Her work has been exhibited in galleries across the country.
Worsfold started creating art as a child while living overseas and continued her studies, culminating in an MFA in Fine Art Photography from the University of Florida. Brandy’s work creates a personal narrative regarding subjects like insomnia, personal identity and mythology.
Worsfold’s broad range of work leans toward the intensely personal. In this exhibition she will be showing new images from her Night Works series which illustrates the romance and danger that lurks in that space between sleep and dreams, where lucid thoughts and flights of fancy collide.
Following the art opening will be a concert featuring local favorites Be Brave Bold Robot, psyche-garage rockers Buzzmutt from San Francisco, indie soundscapes from Cold Eskimo, and freak folk faves Appetite. This is an all ages show sponsored by Concerts For Charity.
PLEASE NOTE: Beatnik Studios is NOT OPEN on SECOND SATURDAYS! Our studio and gallery are booked up for private events. We will be open for the Preview Thursday art walk November 8th from 6:00 - 8:00 pm.
