Three New Artists and Final Friday Party

Beatnik Studios is presenting the work of three artists this summer, all of whom are new to our gallery. Beatnik continues to bring genuine cultural life to the Broadway District with our opening receptions each Final Friday. On June 29th we’ll feature the artwork of three talented artists, a bit of fire dancing, a selection of local food trucks and a concert from 9:00 ‘til midnight with The Cave Women, Hans Eberbach, and Mason Rex.


The Artists:



Cassandra Reeves’ background in shamanism and healing work is evident in all of her artwork whether it is a collage/assemblage piece or Dia de los Muertos imagery. A selection of her artwork from both of these series will be on display in a show titled “Impermanence”. Reeves has created an elegant series of modest-sized collages that illuminate the spiritual power that lies within and around us. She states, “The entire collection has been made with prayer and infused with healing energy. It is my wish that this art will inspire a joyful spirit in the viewer.” In addition, some of her mixed media works utilizing the icon of the skeleton pay homage to cultural idols in an amusing manner.



Joseph Peters has painted a beautiful collection of hand tools that he uses in his day job in construction. In his show titled “The Partial Tool List” he imparts an air of transcendency to his well-worn tools - a handsaw with the blade wired in place, a pair of pliers tainted with rust, used earplugs - all of which speak to the harsh life they live. Peters paints exquisite detail into each of his pieces, executed on wood panel with a special ground that includes marble dust in the gesso. The objects are rendered in stark realism against muted backgrounds with a rough charm that illustrates the hard work of building and of painting.



Les Birleson has worked as a professional artist around the globe for over thirty years including projects in Germany, Greece, Austria, Italy and Switzerland. He is truly a conceptual artist, moving freely between different mediums, themes, and scales of work. Locally, he has created two notable public art projects - Traveling Light above the Terminal B ticket counters at Sacramento International Airport, and Open Circle - an installation the size of a small park at the water pumping station on Riverside Boulevard next to Congregation B’nai Israel.

When Birleson relocated to the Sacramento area he built a 3,000 square foot studio on the banks of the Sacramento River near Knights Landing where he created a series of monumental landscape paintings titled the "River Series". The images are a contemplation on the cycle of seasons and the moods of the river. A selection of these works will be exhibited along with smaller recent pieces. Birleson currently lives and works at his home studio on the island of Kauai, HI.

Autumn Sky and Sherman Baker CD Release Concert. Saturday, June 2

Sacramento singer-songwriters Sherman Baker (Seventeenth Street) and Autumn Sky ( The Hallelujah Chorus) celebrate the release of their new albums on June 2nd at Beatnik Studios with very special guest Ricky Berger! Baker first turned ears five years ago with “Dreamers”, a five-song EP released in 2007. At the time, critics welcomed him as “a leading singer-songwriter,” raving about his “delicate yet somber voice” (Sacramento Bee) and his “magnetic and Dylanic” sense of melody (Sacramento News & Review). However promising, this debut was followed by a long silence. Finally putting an end to this hiatus, Baker is back with “Seventeenth Street”, a fully matured, full-length album. Produced and engineered by Robert Cheek (Deftones, Tera Melos), the album also features guest appearances by Matt McCord (Cake), Kris Anaya (An Angle, Doombird) and pedal-steel legend Bruce Kaphan (who scored innumerable feature films, including Masked and Anonymous, with Bob Dylan, Jeff Bridges and many more). “Step Free” an exhibit of painting and photography by Wes Davis and Jayme Goodwin

This month Beatnik Studios will feature artworks by Wes Davis and Jayme Goodwin. Showing together for the first time Wes and Jayme will be exhibiting works on the beauty grace and flow of Dance and Skateboarding. This show will depict the similarities between the two seemingly different talents.

Wes Davis Graduated from Sac State with a Bachelor of Arts in Photography. He was instrumental in the creation of Beatnik Studios. Currently he works as a professional photographer, shooting for several publications in Sacramento such as Submerge and Sacramento News and Review. Wes has always been a skateboarder and has been photographing it for years as a passion project. This will be the first time Wes has shown this body of work.

Jayme Goodwin Graduated from Sac State with a BA in art. Currently he works at Pretty in Ink as a Tattoo artist. Jayme has been fascinated with painting dancers for some time now. His work is muted with eerie undertones but is captivating in the way he depicts the grace and beauty of his subject. “I love painting dancers because the whole art form is visual. They are aware of every square inch of their bodies and how it is perceived by the viewer.”

Charles Dilulo graduated from Sacramento State with a BA in art. He then went on to work at the DMV for years where he would walk to and from work everyday. Any chance he got he would cut through alleyways because, “That’s where you find the best stuff”. For about 10 years he has been meticulously compiling various objects and asembling them into beautiful works of art. Currently, his studio is a house which is a virtual museum of Charles’s work. No wall, chair, or lamp has gone untouched by Charles’s artistic hand.

Andy Littlefield graduated from Chico state with a BFA in drawing and painting. His mono-transfer prints on wood are notable for their understatement. Andy works in a print shop where he scavenges his wood canvases and frames from discarded shipping material. After transferring his photographs onto wood panels he selectively paints in the areas he wants the viewers eye to go; creating a moody, almost eerie effect. Andy refers to himself (jokingly) as “The Dark Thomas Kinkade” pointing to the fact that his work is reproducible, easily accessible to the viewer and affordable.

Call to Artists!!!

Beatnik Studios is currently taking submissions for an upcoming show in the Spring, “The Tower Theater”.

We are looking for photographs, paintings and multi media works of the Tower Theater. The concept is to fill the gallery with only images of the Tower Theater in order to highlight its significance in the community, how it has influenced so many local artists, and those who view there work.

Show will be hung March 28th
Opening reception March 30th
Second Saturday April 14th
Show comes down April 25th

Only submit images of the Tower Theater.
Submission deadline is March15th

Include your name, contact information and the size of the piece. You are welcome to submit as many pieces as you like but only one piece per artist will be selected. Not all submissions will be accepted due to the limited amount of space. All photography submissions need to be framed in order by the time of the show.
